Do deer keep getting in the way and nibbling on your garden veggies and your colorful flowers? Instead of moaning about the numerous deer that roam in your area, try a deer repellant to foil the herds.
Deer will eat almost anything, as most home gardeners already know. But some vegetation is particularly favored. In each region, the most delectable plants vary, but an example of popular deer munchies includes azaleas, hostas, daylilies, phlox, rhododendrons, tulips, lobelia, roses, veggies and fruit trees.
There are a variety of deer repellants on the market. There are items you can purchase and items you can make at home. They rely on a deer’s strong sense of smell.
Liquid Fence Deer and Rabbit Repellant is a popular choice. It works like a charm for some deer herds and it’s an organic, natural product that’s safe to animals, humans and your plants.
One of the most effective barriers is a good fence. Deer can jump more than six feet from a standing position, so opt for a fence at least seven to eight feet tall. If attaching to posts, set them no more than eight to ten feet apart because deer will push on the fence to see if it will give way.
Deer Barrier and X-treme Deer Barrier are made from a black, lightweight material that attaches easily to posts and trees. The original Deer Barrier comes in seven-foot heights, and the X-treme Deer Barrier is available in eight-foot heights.
There are also electronic options, such as the DeerChaser and the Electronic Deer Repeller by Havahart. The DeerChaser emits a sound and a bright, pulsating light intended to scare deer away. The Deer Repeller attracts the deer with an acorn-scented swab and then they receive a small, safe shock to scare them away.
Once you’ve chosen your preferred method of deer repellent, then make sure your protect all of your beloved plants. Deer love to eat bulbs, for instance, so once you plant your bulbs this fall, make sure to spray the area with Liquid Fence. You can also cover the area with chicken wire. Make sure you remove the wire as soon as the green foliage emerges in the spring. Spray with Liquid Fence again as soon as the flowers appear.
Remember, when gardeners swap stories, they often end up talking about the overwhelming subject of keeping deer at bay. So keep in mind that deer are smart creatures and it will take plenty of continued effort on your part to keep your garden and plants safe.
